Vacation Day 1

When we started this morning, the car had 9079 miles on it. We left right around 7:35 and had our first stop a few minutes later to figure out the DVD player malfunction!

Turns out, the a/v cable was more of an a-only cable which wasn’t going to work for Camryn and Hayden to watch the same movie at the same time. So the situation was remedied by giving each girl her own movie to watch.

Next adventure was that I-5 was closed somewhere around Portland, so we were detoured into I-205. I hadn’t been on 205 since high school probably!

We had a potty break at Starbucks in Gladstone and then made our way to Salem for lunch. We rushed breakfast a bit, so we wanted to make sure that the kids ate their lunch – so Quizno’s it was. It was a good choice because the kids ate and didn’t really need to burn off too much energy after that – so we hit the road again!

Play Time

Sam did a bit of research to find a good park for us to take the kids to and he found Skinner Butte Park in Eugene – about an hour drive – perfect! The park had swings, a rain faucet, a tall play structure and lots of other things that the girls had plenty of time to explore.

Hayden Playing with the Rain Faucet

Hayden loved the rain faucet, got herself completely drenched and ended up doing the next leg of the trip in a nightgown, because that was the first thing I could find to put on her. Camryn wouldn’t have anything to do with the water, but worked on her strength by climbing ladders, using the monkey bars and sliding hand rails.

After the park, we swapped drivers for the final stretch to Medford. Sam and I knew it was a long-ish stretch but both of us forgot just how long it was. I was happy to do the driving because Sam had done all of it to that point. Of course, had I remembered how many turns and hills were in that part, I might have not been so excited to drive!

Hayden took a nap and Camryn finished her 2nd or 3rd book of the day. I know she got through the Unicorn Fairy, Judy Moody #3 and she might have finished one more. Judy Moody #4 is in progress (as are a couple other books, she just can’t seem to get enough!)

We took a short swim in the hotel pool – indoors and not that great. Sam got dinner squared away and shortly thereafter we tucked the kids into their beds (Camryn on the pull-out couch, Hayden on the air mattress we brought with us.)

Long day – about 10 hours including our stops but at 8:51pm the girls are quiet and I would say it was a success!

(oh, and the DVD malfunction was more of a sticky cable which we resolved tonight – woohoo for dual screens for the rest of the trip!)
